Who We Are
carole Carole Pocknell
Cert Ed, MA, Cert  CC Relate, MBACP (Snr. Accred)

From early in life I had a keen interest in the natural world and this drew me initially to follow a
career in science teaching in secondary schools. A similar interest in human behaviour and a wish
to help people resolve individual and relationship difficulties prompted my later decision to train
as a counsellor. For many years I worked in Relate as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer, and
a large part of my work involved the supervision and training of counsellors both in Relate and in many other organisations in the private and public sectors.

For a number of years I represented the organisation locally and nationally, and sometimes at government level. Additional training in analytical group work and family therapy further increased
my understanding of organisational issues and family relationships. As an accredited supervisor,
I also offer supervision to other practitioners, and for three years I was co-tutor at the University of Birmingham on the Advanced Certificate in the Supervision of Counsellors. For the last 15 years
I have been co-partner of Willow Counselling Service where I draw on my extensive experience in the counselling field in my work with individuals and couples.

Various aspects of my personal and professional life laid the foundation for my mid-life decision
to pursue a career in counselling. With a background in education, initially teaching music in secondary school and later teaching in primary schools and in a multicultural development unit,
I was committed to promoting personal development and enhancing life opportunities for a wide range of students. A similar focus now underpins my work in counselling where I like to think creatively with individuals and couples about how they may gain insight and get the best out
of their lives.

My experience in counselling has encompassed various settings in the private and public sectors, including a health centre, a student counselling service and in Relate. For the last 15 years I have been co-partner of Willow Counselling Service. I have also been involved in training on counselling courses in further and higher education and have carried out research in the area of racial and cultural identity issues in counselling. Publications include Racial Identity, White Counsellors
and Therapists (Open University Press, 2002) and co-producing a DVD Working with Diversity
in Counselling (University of Leicester, 2008).
